The No Show Show

Wednesday, June 5th, 2019

While I’m publishing an audio file I don’t consider this an official episode of Reid My Mind Radio.

I’ve been pretty busy with life but I’ll be back in two… In the meantime, a congratulations to my daughter and I’d love for you to go on over to the Disability Visibility Podcast as it’s all about podcasting and yours truly is a guest.

Feel free to check out what’s close to 100 episodes available in the archive.

What’s up Reid My Mind Radio Family.

Starting the show with my intro music off the jump, wow, I haven’t done that for a while.

Well, this isn’t a regular episode. I’ll explain that in a second.

First, I want to say hello to anyone new here.
Hello there! My name is T. Reid

I’m the host of this podcast where I bring you compelling people impacted by blindness, low vision and in general disability.
]

Every now and then I include stories from my own experience as someone adjusting to becoming Blind as an adult.

In most cases I pair words with music and sound design to hopefully help with the goal of making the listener challenge their own view of what being blind looks and sounds like.

Have you ever experienced times in life where you felt super aware? Like you know you’re currently in the midst of experiencing a life change.

I’ve been feeling like that for a while now and not sure exactly why. The only thing that I can identify is my baby girl Riana graduated from college yawl! Now of course that’s a big deal. She’s getting ready to go out in the world and do her thing. It’s really hard to believe that. It was just the other day when she was traveling on my shoulders. She loved it there. She would even fall asleep sitting there with her head resting on top of mine. I’d realize she was asleep when her drool would slide down my bald head into my ear. Sounds gross but I thought it was so cute. That’s love yawl.

Now she’s getting ready to do her thing and that could literally take her anywhere in the world. I’m so proud of my baby. And yes, she’s always Daddy’s baby and there’s still a place for her on my shoulders. Metaphorically of course. I don’t want another backiotomy!

Audio: Riana Reid being called during her graduation ceremony.

TR:

I guess the other feelings of change in the air are not as easy to pinpoint. I’m sure some have to do with career change and figuring out where I’m going. I’m working on several things right now but nothing really ready for publication.

I’ll be back with a real episode as scheduled but in the meantime please go on over to the Disability Visibility Podcast which features an episode about podcasting and yes, yours truly is one of the guests. In fact, if you listen to that you’ll get a sneak peek into the next Reid My Mind Radio episode.

If this is your first time here please go back and check out a past episode that is more representative of the podcasts mission. You can start with some recent favorites including my profile of Disability Visibility Podcast host Alice Wong, my conversation with Cheryl Green about the art of accessible and my interview with Day Al Mohamed where you’ll hear all about the Invalid Corps …

There’s close to 100 episodes and one thing that has been quite consistent I think at least is they continue to change and that’s a reflection of my own change and I hope growth.

What’s up RMMRadio?

This is a different sort of episode.

I wanted to take a little time to give an update on a few things podcast related – which includes some personal updates.

But this is an episode so let’s get it started properly.

[Reid My Mind Radio Theme]

Audio from RMMR Episode featuring Penny Melville – brown
If you’ve been listening to RMM Radio for a little while you hopefully remember, Penny Melville Brown one of the three Holman Prize winners featured here on the podcast in 2017.

She’s the host of Baking Blind. As the winner, she was in the midst of her world tour where she’s cooking with different people in various countries.

Right now I want to ask you all to join me in sending support and get well wishes to Penny who was in a car accident in France. The injuries were pretty severe – enough where she was put into an induced coma for 5 weeks.

[Audio from Penny’s YouTube Channel]

The link to her YouTube video explaining the accident and her latest challenge is on Reid My Mind.com or go on over to Baking Blind in YouTube.

Please give it a watch and send her a tweet or email wishing her well.

Penny, you go ahead do what you do and get better soon! For those who heard your story here on the podcast, they know a bit about your determination and there’s no doubt in my mind at least, you have what it takes to recover from this accident.

In fact I can hear you now…
[Audio from episode – Penny saying “I can do that!”]

Take your time and get well. We need you out there doing your work… Baking Blind!

And you know what I want to hear from you right?

[Audio from episode, Penny laughing]

It’s good to be back recording this podcast.

In fact, that’s the reason I was away… my back!

For the past couple of years I’ve been dealing with a herniated disk. It was becoming more and more debilitating. I found myself spending way too much time in bed because it was too painful to sit and stand. The bed was a very limited source of relief.

I tried, but it’s really challenging to be productive in bed.

You know what I mean! I’m talking about producing audio, writing …

I was nervous yawl! I didn’t want to get surgery but I didn’t want to spend more time in pain not getting anything done.

Well, I bit the bullet and had laser surgery…

[James Brown, “I Feel Good”]]

I have some more recuperating to do but so far I think I’ll be putting on my dancing shoes sooner than even I thought.

I have more Reid My Mind Radio coming up soon.

[Audio from 2BlindMic … Intro]

In addition, I have a new weekly podcast. This time I have a partner. Doctor Dre. Dre. Dre and I met when I interviewed him last year about his experience with vision loss following complications of Diabetes.

Our podcast is called 2BlindMics.

that’s the number 2BlindMics

Check out what we call a 2Byte – a little taste of an episode…

This one is featuring Rodney Carter former NFL running back for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
we call the full episode first and 10.

[2BlindMIcs…]

Go ahead and subscribe to the podcast.
It’s now available on Apple Podcast, Google Play, Spotify, Stitcher and Tune In.

Remember that’s the number 2 BlindMics

Now, I’ve been sitting too long and need to walk around and stretch this back and these legs… I have some dancing to do!

[RMMRadio Outro]
Peace

Here’s What I’ve Been Up To

Monday, August 4th, 2014

It’s quite obvious that I haven’t been making the most of my personal blog lately. But what may not be as obvious is I have been turning out content. Most of that content has been on behalf of the Pennsylvania Council of the Blind. The content that has been the most fun for me is producing two very different audio projects.

First, there’s Talking Advocacy & Government or as we like to refer to it, TAG. This mostly quarterly podcast focuses on explaining various advocacy issues and appealing to listeners to take specific action   often to advance an issue or piece of legislation.

The second is a more lighthearted marketing tool known as the Convention Blast. These monthly pieces alternate between the written format and audio. The most fun of course is producing the audio extended commercials advertising the PCB State Convention & Conference, for which I am currently the Coordinator. These give me the chance to interview guest speakers or facilitators about their scheduled presentations. Sometimes I even have the chance to just get a little silly and have fun with the piece and include some musical productions.

This year, I was given the opportunity to speak publicly about my experience with Non 24 Hour Sleep Wake Disorder and the use of the drug Hetlioz. For those unaware of Non24, here’s a description from their website:

“People with Non-24 who are totally blind lack the light perception necessary to synchronize the circadian clock with the 24-hour day-night cycle.”

This caused me to experience extremely erratic sleep patterns for years – making it incredibly difficult for me to concentrate and remain awake during the day.

At some point I hope to share more of my experience, but for now I recommend learning more on Non 24 and Hetlioz. I would really appreciate anyone reading this to go on over to the PCB links mentioned above and take a listen to some of the available episodes. Help us spread the word about the current advocacy topics like HR4040-All about improving education for blind children, HR3749 – Legislation to enable people with low vision to access devices that will enable them to live independent lives or just get more on the upcoming PCB State Convention & Conference. I really had a fun time with the latest episode which features the Students Seminar being held during our convention to aid students with vision loss throughout their college years. If you by chance happen to be a “Hip Hop Head” check out how I put my own spin on “Impeach the President.” Oh no he didn’t! Truly, I did!
